An identifier for the record
FMCSA uses the USDOT number to connect safety information to a company. Use it to keep the right entity in view when names or trading styles look similar.
Use the number, then compare the identity
Search the number and compare the returned legal name with your paperwork. Keep the identifier in your notes. A matching number does not establish that a caller represents the entity, nor does it replace checking the relevant authority record.
Do not substitute a docket number
An MC, FF or MX number refers to an authority docket. It is a separate identifier. Preserve the prefix and search it as a docket rather than assuming the digits are a USDOT number.
